Life is more mystery than misery

(or at least, that's what I like to think)

Auntie Mame

Auntie Mame is modern classic novel by Patrick Dennis (1921-1976), whose real name was Edward Everett Tanner III.  First published by Vanguard Press in 1955, after being turned down by 19 publishers, this novel which became one of the bestselling American books of the 20th century, narrates the story of a ten year old orphan (Patrick) who goes to live with his eccentric aunt Mame Dennis after the death of his father.

More than 50 years later, the novel returned to the bookshop by the hand of Penguin in its Modern Classic collection last year ( 2010), creating a whole new generation of fans. Readers are being captivated by this glamorous, charming well written story, like they were the first time, when Auntie Mame sold more than two million copies, setting records on the  New York Times Bestseller list  and became a Broadway musical and two films: Auntie Mame starring Rosalind Rusell and Mame starring Lucille Ball.

With a witty and comic style, the author presents using the first person voice a charming and funny character in a Depression era context, a New York socialite who thinks that 9:00 AM is “the middle of the night” and solves with humor, laughter, irony and audacity the more than one million situations in which she and Dennis find themselves in that peculiar relationship son-auntie.  Always a fighter for maintaining her lifestyle and convictions, Auntie Mame is that special character that grows on you and inspires you while having fun.

A perfect book to get a smile out of you in a crisis time like this.  Don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy this modern classic!
