Life is more mystery than misery

(or at least, that's what I like to think)

The financial lives of the poets

This compassionate, brilliant and brilliantly funny book is the fifth novel of Jess Walters, a former National Book Award finalist and winner of the Edgar Allan Poe Award, and also an excellent writer who lives with his wife and children in Spokane – Washington.

With a perfect good timing, (global crisis and all), The Finantial lives of the poets happens to be an awesome post-recession novel, full of tenderness and an amazing sense of humor.

Mathew Prior, a financial journalist who quit his job to set a website where he pretended to mix poetry with financial news and advice, finds himself broken and in great risk of losing his house.  And not only has the poor lad six days to save the house but he is also convinced that his wife, Lisa, is having (or about to have) an online affair with her childhood sweetheart, Chuck, while he is at home with his senile Dad and no job or idea of what to do to save it all. So he decides that the only way to save his house, family and marriage is to become a “temporal” pot dealer using the last money he has. Mathew guide us in first person and with and hilarious voice through this compassionate, funny but yet critical adventure, mixing the more conventional narrative with several of his financial and hilarious poems.

Walters offers a very entertaining, interesting and brilliant novel with an amazing and funny main character, a good story and even better storytelling. Just don’t miss it!
